Jio sets off new telecom war with Voda Idea, Airtel over premium plans

Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea are put to get a legal battle that will decide on the future of profitable information programs. On Tuesday, the Mukesh Ambani-controlled firm appealed to the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) to listen to its side before passing any order on Vodafone Idea’s petition against the regulatory curbs on top programs, triggering a brand new faceoff from the financially stressed sector.

Jio’s program is not yet been admitted.

Premium programs are significant contributors to average revenue per user (ARPU) of those 2 telcos Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea.

They’re already grappling with the dilemma of pending dues connected to AGR (corrected gross earnings ) from the Supreme Court.

The AGR instance, mandating telecom businesses to cover a total of Rs 1.47 trillion, is coming up for hearing on July 20. Telcos have made a part payment of their dues.

In the tariff program instance, the dispute is mostly over Vodafone’s RedX strategy established last November. Clients were provided unlimited local and STD calls, unlimited information up to 50 percent higher data rate, highest client support and Netflix subscription. The strategy was amended in May. As of June, RedX had awakened 127,000 subscribers. Even though Jio — for extended the disruptor from the telecom sector — has termed the superior data strategy , Vodafone has predicted the criticism unsubstantiated and obscure.

In its program at TDSAT, Jio stated it could be directly influenced by the results of Vodafone’s allure. The business added that the result would affect fair competition and so the way it conducts business. It could be determinative of their tariff strategies the applicant in addition to its rivals can validly provide, Jio explained. In its appeal, Vodafone Idea recorded the chronology of events resulting in suspension of its own RedX program. On July 9, Trai advised Vodafone in regards to the criticism and the following day searched information about the strategy. On July 11, Trai requested the company to withhold the plan,” it said.

Jio, in its criticism to Trai, stated the superior data supplies were fraught with problems and may maintain non-compliance of regulatory supervision. Among other things it stated that no operator may give a warranty to any client for any minimal rate.

Vodafone Idea has stated Jio’s allegations were aimed at upsetting its smooth operation. While looking for a stay on the Trai arrangement, Vodafone Idea stated the regulator acted in haste without hearing its own views. The Trai arrangement is random and illegal and figures to pre-judging the matter, the plea said. The RedX scheme was in operation for the previous eight months and in that interval Trai never raised a problem concerning the program being non-compliant, Vodafone Idea asserted.
